First is a cabinet card by Newsboy of famed actress Lillian Russell on a gray mount with light blue trim and lettering. On mount recto, 'Newsboy New York / 340 / Lillian Russell / Copyright by J. J. Falk'. Lillian Russell (1861-1922) was an American singer and actress. Slight water stain to upper mount, not affecting image. The second image is on a tan mount and red lettering. Titled in mount recto 'Lillian Russell', numbered 540 with Newsboys photographic logo. Some water staining appears on this image and it is a bit light.
She began her career in light opera in 1879. When Tony Pastor introduced her at his casino in the early 1880s she became known as the 'American Beauty.' Russell eventually had her own company. The public enjoyed her flamboyant personality and her affair with Diamond Jim Brady is legendary.
