The play, by Claude Fitch, was based on a French novel by Alphonse Daudet. Sappho was a ancient Greek poetess who was a lesbian. She lived on the Island of Lesbos off Greece. Nethersole played the role of Fanny, an unmarried but very sexual woman. The production opened at Wallack's Theatre on February 5, 1900, and was closed by the New York City police on March 5 for immorality. Olga Nethersole was arrested for 'violating public decency.' She was found innocent. Nethersole went on to produce two revivals of 'Sapho.'
