Agnes Booth by Falk

Great pose of the famous actress. Identified with Falk's stamp mount recto. Circa 1890. Agnes Booth (1843-1910), born in Australia, as Marian Agnes Land Rookes immigrated to the U.S. in 1858. She first gained a reputation as Hermione in 'The Winter's Tale' in 1860, at Maguire's Opera House in San Francisco. The second wife and widow of Harry Perry, she married the famous actor Junius Brutus Booth Jr., who was then manager of the Boston Theatre company, in 1867. In the 1870s Booth toured as a star and her performance in Shakespeare's 'Antony and Cleopatra' was a great success. In the late 1870s she was the leading lady at the Park Theatre and in the 80s at the Madison Square Theatre. The actress was known for her eloquent facial expressions: she could rivet the attention of an audience during several minutes of silence, simply by the play of her features. Although her husband died in 1883, she did not retire from the stage until 1897, at age 53.
